Our Physicians

Haysam Akkad, MD

Dr. Akkad is an interventional cardiologist at The Nebraska Medical Center. He is a graduate of University of Aleppo Medical School in Syria. Dr. Akkad completed an internal medicine residency at St. Francis Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Penn. He completed a fellowship in critical care medicine at State University of New York Health Science Center in Syracuse, N.Y. and a cardiology fellowship at MCP/Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, Penn. Dr. Akkad also completed an interventional cardiology fellowship at University Pittsburg Medical Center in Pittsburgh. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Internal Medicine - Cardiovascular Disease.

Thomas Howard, MD

Dr. Howard is a vascular surgeon at The Nebraska Medical Center. He is a graduate of Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. and Yale Medical School in New Haven, Conn. He completed his residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital. Dr. Howard is certified in general surgery and vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

Jason Johanning, MD

Dr. Johanning is a vascular and endovascular surgeon at The Nebraska Medical Center. He is a graduate of the University of Kansas Medical School in Kansas City, Kan. He completed his general surgery residency at Saginaw Cooperative Hospitals in Saginaw, Mich. and a fellowship in vascular surgery at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Penn. Dr. Johanning is certified in general surgery and vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

Ali Khoynezhad, MD

Dr. Khoynezhad is an endovascular cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in open and endovascular repair of various aortic diseases. He is a graduate of the University of Cologne College of Medicine in Koeln, Germany. He completed a cardiovascular and thoracic surgery residency at Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, N.Y., and an endovascular and vascular surgery fellowship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, Calif. Prior to his training in the United States, Dr. Khoynezhad completed two years of cardiac surgery fellowship at Charite University Medical Center in Berlin, Germany. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Sushama P. Kunnathil, MD

Dr. Kunnathil is an interventional radiologist at The Nebraska Medical Center. She is a graduate of Calicut Medical College in India. Dr. Kunnathil completed her radiology residency at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., and a fellowship in interventional radiology at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. Dr. Kunnathil is certified by the American Board of Radiology.

G. Matthew Longo, MD

Dr. Longo is a vascular and endovascular surgeon at The Nebraska Medical Center. He is a graduate of the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb., where he completed his surgical residency. His fellowship work was conducted at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Ill. Dr. Longo is certified in general surgery and vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

Thomas Lynch, MD

Dr. Lynch is a vascular surgeon at The Nebraska Medical Center. He is a graduate of Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and completed his residency at Georgetown University Medical Center. He also completed a fellowship in vascular surgery at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. Dr. Lynch is certified in vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

Edward O’Leary, MD

Dr. O’Leary is an interventional cardiologist at The Nebraska Medical Center. He is a graduate of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas. Dr. O’Leary completed an internal medicine residency at Tulane University in New Orleans, La. where he was also chief resident. He also completed fellowships in cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology at University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. O’Leary is certified in endovascular medicine by The American Board of Vascular Medicine. He is also certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases and interventional cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Iraklis Pipinos, MD

Dr. Pipinos is a vascular and endovascular surgeon at The Nebraska Medical Center. A graduate of the University of Crete School of Medicine in Greece, he completed his general surgery residency and vascular surgery fellowship at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Mich. His endovascular surgery fellowship was completed at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. Dr. Pipinos is board certified in general surgery and vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

Dick Slater, MD

Dr. Slater is an interventional radiologist at The Nebraska Medical Center. He is a graduate of The University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb. Dr. Slater completed a diagnostic radiology residency and a fellowship in interventional radiology at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colo. Dr. Slater is certified by the American Board of Radiology and has added qualifications in neuroradiology and interventional radiology.

William E. Thorell, MD

Dr. Thorell is a neurosurgeon at The Nebraska Medical Center. He graduated from University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb., where he also completed his residency and served as chief resident. After finishing his residency in neurosurgery, Dr. Thorell performed two additional years of fellowship training in endovascular neurosurgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. He is board eligible.

Nicole Spellman, RN, BSN

Ms. Spellman is the Vascular Center coordinator for The Nebraska Medical Center. She is a graduate of Clarkson College in Omaha, Neb., where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. Ms. Spellman also completed an Associate of Science degree in health information management from College of Saint Mary in Omaha. She is a licensed registered nurse in the state of Nebraska.
