The ID Pharmacy Fellowship at The Nebraska Medical Center combines ID-focused clinical practice and research in a unique two-year experience. The primary emphasis of the training program is antimicrobial stewardship: a rational, systematic approach to the use of antimicrobial agents in order to achieve optimal outcomes. The ultimate goal is to create an experience for the fellow that involves research-based investigation and its application to the advancement of clinical practice.

The first year will be primarily devoted to patient care activities with the ID consult services and the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program (ASP). Additionally, the fellow will begin planning and developing research interests as well as participating in research opportunities. Furthermore, the fellow will learn how to develop, implement, and evaluate antimicrobial management programs on an institution-wide basis, which will include the use of an electronic clinical decision support system. The focus of the second year will be research, predominantly related to antimicrobial stewardship. This will include training in study design and organization, protocol development, Institutional Review Board submissions, grant writing, data collection and analysis, abstract/manuscript writing and submission, and presentation of results. The fellow will have the opportunity to spend time with a Ph.D. microbiologist, learning laboratory-based ID research techniques. Opportunities for graduate level coursework and didactic and experiential teaching are available and encouraged.
